Proper care and adjustment of Your Lucky Chin Strap
Your Lucky firefighter leather helmet chin strap is designed for durability, comfort, and reliable performance. Following these care and adjustment instructions will help maintain its condition, extend its service life, and ensure proper fit in accordance with relevant safety guidelines. Important Note on NFPA Guidance:
NFPA standards (including updates in NFPA 1970/1851) require that helmet soft goods, such as chin straps, be removable and reinstallable within 20 minutes for effective cleaning and decontamination. Your Lucky chin strap meets this requirement, allowing quick removal and reattachment.
Cleaning the Chin Strap
Regular cleaning removes dirt, sweat, and contaminants while preserving the leather's integrity. Remove the chin strap from the helmet if needed.
Use mild soap (pH-neutral or mild detergent) and lukewarm water.
Gently wash the strap by hand, scrubbing lightly with a soft cloth or brush to remove soil. Avoid harsh chemicals, solvents, bleach, or abrasive cleaners, as these can damage the leather.
Rinse thoroughly with clean water to remove all soap residue.
Air dry completely in a well-ventilated area away from direct heat sources or sunlight. Do not machine dry or use forced heat.
Once fully dry, apply a fresh coat of high-gloss shoe polish, such as Kiwi Parade Gloss, Angelus, or Griffin Mirror Shoe Shine. These products contain high levels of carnauba wax that condition the leather, restore shine, protect against moisture, and help maintain suppleness.
Buff to a high shine with a soft cloth for best results.
Clean as needed after exposure to dirt or sweat, or follow your department's schedule for routine maintenance.
Adjusting the Chin Strap for Proper Fit
A correctly adjusted chin strap keeps the helmet secure without restricting movement or causing discomfort. The strap features a quick-release buckle and adjustable tail with magnets. Recommended Adjustment Method (Preferred for Longevity):
Unclip the quick-release function to fully release the chin strap.
Holding both straps of the male end of the chin strap, slide the male side of the buckle up the leather straps a couple of inches to loosen.
Adjust tail end of the male strap to desired location.
Slide male side of the buckle back down straps to locked position and reclip buckle.
Test the fit: The strap should hold the helmet firmly in place, with minimal slippage, while allowing comfortable jaw movement. It should sit under the chin without excessive pressure.
Alternative Method (Not Recommended for Regular Use):
You can tighten the chin strap by simply tugging on the tail end of the strap to pull it through the buckle. While quick, this method causes more wear on the leather and hardware over time and is not the recommended way to adjust for daily or frequent adjusting.
Additional Tips
Inspect the strap regularly for cracks, fraying, stitching issues, or hardware wear. Replace if damaged.
Avoid over-tightening, which can stress the leather and reduce its lifespan.
Store the helmet in a cool, dry place when not in use.
Always refer to your specific helmet manufacturer's instructions for any model-specific details, as they take precedence.
By following these steps, your Lucky Firefighter Helmet Chin Strap will stay clean, conditioned, properly fitted, and ready for service. Stay safe!
